When can a baby eat rhubarb?

According to Healthfully, you can offer rhubarb to your baby once he or she is ready for solid foods. But there are some things to keep in mind.

Some believe rhubarb should not be offered to babies because they contain oxalates. While oxalates do occur in rhubarb, they also occur in spinach and strawberries. The highest amount, though, is found in the rhubarb leaves. Rhubarb leaves are poisonous when ingested in large amounts.

The opinions on the amounts of oxalates in the stalks differ. Some scientists say the amount of oxalates in the stalks is almost zero, others claim that growing conditions can cause the levels to increase to a dangerous level.

Keep in mind that rhubarb often is cooked with a lot of sugar. When you cook it for your baby, try to avoid adding a lot of sugar, but rather sweeten it by combining it with other fruits.

If you’re not sure about when to offer rhubarb to your baby, contact your pediatrician for advice. Or start with other fruits, like apple, pear, or banana.
